Research

I was a Ph.D. student in Computer Science from Sept 2003 to Sept 2007 in the Applied Crypto Group. My advisor was Dan Boneh. My Ph.D. thesis is titled "Encryption Schemes from Bilinear Maps". I am now working for Clarium Capital Management.

During my Ph.D., my research interests were between applied cryptography and security. I am also interested in algorithms, data structures, and the non-tedious parts of systems and networks. I worked with Stas on signatures. I also worked with Hovav and Nagendra on some systems security. Most of my papers and talk slides, and some of my notes can be found online.

I have a Erdös number of 3 (using the two author definition) from Stanislaw Jarecki (through Andrew Odlyzko).

I was on the program committee for USENIX Security 2004 and 2005. I am on the program committee for the ACM CCS conference in 2008.

My first undergraduate project is a SSL and TLS sniffer. As far as I can tell, this is the first SSL and TLS sniffer and is still the only one that can do SSLv2. It is apparently packaged in OpenBSD and FreeBSD ports.

Photographs

I enjoy traveling, climbing, hiking, and generally being outside and seeing interesting new things. I bought my first SLR (a Canon Digital Rebel) in Nov 2004. I started off with the Sigma 18-125 lens, and later added a Canon 70-200 f4 lens. I am now using the Canon T1i with the Canon 17-55 f2.8 IS lens and the Canon 70-200 f4 IS.

I've tried to learn a little about photography so that I can take nicer photos of my trips. The book that I learnt the technical aspects of photography from is "Nature Photography Field Guide" by John Shaw. Since then, I've learnt a lot from my good friend Eric, who has some really great photos.

My most recent trip is to the Big Island of Hawaii.

This gallery contains my favourite photos since I bought my first SLR; I recently reprocessed the RAW files for these photos and I think they look better now.

These are the photographs from my trips since I bought a SLR. The pictures are displayed using Jalbum with a slightly customized Exhibitplus skin.

Prints and stock: I've had a few print requests, so please contact me at "eujin at cs.stanford.edu" if you want prints. In general, the prints, especially for the recent trips, look significantly better than the web images. I've also had some requests for stock photographs. Debian On an IBM X23

I am a Debian convert. Maintaining Debian is a lot easier than RedHat once the system is installed. I wrote up a fairly comprehensive page on how to get Debian running on that particular Thinkpad. I just updated the page with instructions on getting hibernation and the modem to work.

Cease and Desist

I received two cease and desist letters from Network Associates over their trademark "SNIFFER".

Letter 1, Letter 2, Page 1, Letter 2, Page 2.

I'm not sure why they are threatening a non-commercial student project whose software does not compete with theirs. Furthermore, "sniffer" is a generic term used in networking to describe a class of programs that monitor network traffic. After receiving the second letter, I passed this on to the CS department at Stanford, who in turn got the Stanford lawyers to draft a nice reply back to the NAI.
